2026 BAUER Poseidon Edition PE-TE / PE-TB Filter Cartridge Replacement: Step-by-Step Maintenance Guide

Replacing the filter cartridge on a BAUER Poseidon Edition PE-TE / PE-TB is the single most important maintenance task on a breathing-air compressor, because the cartridge is what keeps the delivered gas inside the breathing-air quality limits. This guide follows the same discipline used on high-pressure filling systems: depressurise fully, keep the new cartridge sealed until the moment of fitting, and prove the result with an air test.

1. Equipment overview

The BAUER Poseidon Edition PE-TE / PE-TB is a breathing air compressor in the mid-range marine configuration (verify on data plate) class, with a maximum working pressure of up to 330/350 bar and three-phase electric motor drive. It is commonly used for shipboard and offshore installations, corrosion-exposed marine environments. As a marine corrosion-protected design installed in salt-laden atmospheres, the filtration and drain routine deserve particular attention.

These values are typical market configurations. Confirm every value against the data plate and the manual of the individual unit before ordering parts or planning service.

2. When to replace the cartridge

Most manufacturers specify cartridge life both in operating hours and in calendar time, whichever comes first, and high-humidity or high-temperature duty shortens it. Treat the following as triggers, not as optional checks:

  • Hours or calendar interval in the manual reached (record hours at every change);
  • Rising moisture, odour or oil results in routine air testing;
  • Condensate carry-over or a saturated separator that the drain routine no longer controls;
  • Any intervention that opened the filtration housing, or a long storage period.

3. Replacement procedure

  1. Stop the compressor and let the unit come to rest. Open the condensate drain and confirm the system is fully depressurised - on most portable and cabinet units this takes one to two minutes; never open a housing under pressure.
  2. Isolate the electrical supply and allow hot surfaces to cool.
  3. Remove the filter housing cap with the correct tool. Inspect the cap seal and the housing bore for damage or deposits.
  4. Withdraw the used cartridge and note its condition and the hours recorded. Note the flow direction.
  5. Open the new cartridge only at this point. Vacuum-sealed packaging exists for a reason: a cartridge left open in a humid room starts adsorbing moisture before it is fitted.
  6. Fit the cartridge with its adapter and seals in the correct orientation, then tighten the cap to the specified torque and back it off about a quarter turn so vibration cannot seize the thread.
  7. Run the unit, check for leaks at the housing, and log the change.
  8. Take an air sample at the outlet before releasing gas to users.

4. Common mistakes

  • Opening the housing before the system is fully depressurised;
  • Fitting a cartridge that has been open to room air for weeks;
  • Re-using seals, or mixing seal materials with the specified lubricant;
  • Resetting the hour counter without recording the change in the maintenance log;
  • Skipping the post-change air test because the previous test passed.

5. Air quality and compliance

Breathing air is a life-safety product. In the EU the reference standard is EN 12021 (current edition), and in North America diving applications commonly reference CGA Grade E, while fire-service programmes often reference NFPA 1989 for breathing-air quality and filling operations. Limits differ between standards and editions, so always test against the edition in force at your site.

ParameterIndicative limit / requirementWhat a failure usually points to
Carbon monoxide (CO)Typical EN 12021 limit: max 5 ml/m3 (5 ppm)Rising CO usually indicates intake contamination or overheated lubricant - check intake siting and stage temperatures
Carbon dioxide (CO2)Typical EN 12021 limit: max 500 ml/m3 (500 ppm)Elevated CO2 often traces to intake air drawn from a confined, occupied or engine-exhaust-affected area
Oil (lubricant mist)Typical EN 12021 limit: max 0.5 mg/m3Oil carry-over points to separator, drain routine or a saturated cartridge
Water / humidityPressure dew point requirement to keep cylinders free of liquid waterVerify dryer performance, drain routine and cartridge condition
Odour and tasteNo objectionable odourAny detectable odour means stop using the gas and re-test before release

A practical programme is: test every production batch or at the interval required by your authority, keep a written record of results, replace the filter cartridge by hours and by test result (whichever comes first), and re-test after any intervention on the filtration system. A BAUER Poseidon Edition PE-TE / PE-TB that passes its air test but shows a rising trend is telling you the cartridge or the intake environment needs attention before it fails a limit.

6. Service scope

BAOSI / DEJUE (Shanghai) supplies high-pressure breathing-air compressors and also supports third-party service and consumables for mixed fleets. For the BAUER Poseidon Edition PE-TE / PE-TB and comparable units we can supply compatible filter cartridges, valve plate kits, belts, lubricants and seals, and provide troubleshooting support, overhaul guidance and annual maintenance planning. Where a brand-specific part number is required, we match it from your serial number and filter housing type.

Need parts or a second opinion on a fault? Send the model, serial number, operating hours and the recorded stage pressures or temperatures - our technical team will respond with a parts list and a diagnostic plan. Contact the BAOSI technical team.

Disclaimer: This article is provided for general reference only. Specifications vary by serial number, build year and market configuration - always verify against the original equipment manufacturer's manual and your unit's data plate before service. Work on high-pressure equipment should be performed by qualified, trained technicians, and any safety-critical repair should follow local regulations and the OEM procedure.
